We’ve recently seen more children riding battery-operated or electric quad bikes in public areas. While these may seem like toys, they are classed as motor vehicles under the law. Typically they look like the picture below and have a rating of 1000W or higher.
This means they cannot be ridden on public roads, footpaths, cycle paths, or parks – only on private land and with the landowner’s permission.
Riding in public places can be:
Dangerous to the rider, pedestrians, and other road users.
Illegal, which could lead to police action, seizure of the bike, and even prosecution.
Parents and guardians:
Please make sure these vehicles are only used safely and legally.
Keep them on private land.
Supervise children at all times.
Ensure riders wear suitable protective gear such as helmets, body protection and gloves.
